E(art)h Chicago

Public Art connecting Chicagoans to our earth and to each other

An initiative of the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation (ISEIF), the E(art)h Chicago (pronounced “Earth Art Chicago”) program framework was co-created by over 75 Chicagoans of all ages including artists, environmentalists, community leaders & organizers, scientists, and other Chicago residents who participated in interactive co-creation sessions.

The challenge was to create a name for the project as well as a branding system that would attract artists and Chicagoans alike to reflect on climate injustices through artistic expression. The name and branding needed to capture the essence of the work, without overshadowing the stunning art created by the featured artists.

About the Art

The branding pays homage to the very first Earth Day back in April of 1970. The colors have a retro feel, but are activating. The name and logo themselves remind us that our earth and art are composed of one another. The earth is art, and art is of the earth. The logo invites the opportunity to see the earth and art in one another, which is where the human element comes in.

Project's Goal

In the face of failing action on environmental challenges, E(art)H Chicago (pronounced “Earth Art Chicago”) called on local artists to help Chicagoans process environmental grief, injustice, and hope within their communities through art – enabling us to look at debilitatingly large problems through beauty, curiosity, and togetherness.

The final project comprised of 12 artworks across the city of Chicago, featuring several different mediums and types of patron interaction.
